Don't be dissuaded by their unblinking eyes :-)
So on yet another trip to the beauty supply store the other day, I realized that the joy of this sort of errand is not shared by most. It’s amazing the things you can no longer recognize as unique after a while. My daughter helped bring me back to reality when I heard her casually remark to her friend, “Well he said it was 100% human hair, but it turned out it really wasn’t”. Well Trinity, you really have a future in the family business if you decide to pursue it!
I also considered naming this post “Where to buy a blow dryer” since this is how most people who are not hairdressers find their way to a beauty supply store. Hair color developer is another item a client was searching for the other day in order to remove stains from vintage dishes, say what?? I had to look this one up myself, but it’s true and here is the link

1. Flat irons: I use a brand called Diana the Huntress which is ceramic. The beauty supply across the street from us, Min’s, carries Salono Sapphire which I like a lot too. Try to use a thinner iron because it’s easier to manipulate and make sure the plates clamp together pretty tightly to create enough tension on the hair. Also, an iron that has a temperature control tends to be better quality.
2. Blow dryers: Let’s start with the Fringe favorite, the Twin Turbo. The baby is a beast so don’t plan on traveling with it, unless you are willing to give up valuable luggage space. It does however have amazing power and speed as well as ceramic and ionic options. Depending on the model, expect to pay 95- 200 dollars. If you blow out your hair on a regular basis, well worth the investment. Next in line is the Conair Blackbird, light dependable, and user friendly, as well as compact and inexpensive. The downside to this blowdryer is the power, expect to pay around $50. T3 Tourmaline Featherweight, has been the hot dryer on the market for a while, a quiet dryer that will dry the hair quickly because of the ionic charge from the tourmaline mineral (up to 60% they claim) and weighs only 13 oz. It is however one of the most expensive models, expect to pay around $200.
3. Hairbrushes: Also a common request: “Where can I purchase a hairbrush?” so until yours truly gets off her keister and orders some into retail, you can pick up round brushes, vent brushes, and my personal favorite a Mason Pierson (also referred to as a flat brush). We do still carry the best paddle brush on the market, and the only one Aveda still makes, so be sure to come to us for that!
4. Bobby pins, hairbands and more: Great accessories to be found at these places. Ricky’s in New York is still one of my favorite stops, and although not convenient to here, definitely worth the stop when you are in the city.
5. Hair Product- Of course we recommend Aveda and do NOT recommend purchasing it from a Beauty Supply store. Often salon products like Aveda, Paul Mitchell, Redken, etc. have been diverted to these stores and are older products, watered down, or just more expensive then what you would normally be paying.
6. Hair Color-Not recommended since we believe you should always have your hair colored by a professional. Now that I have made my disclaimer, I will tell you that there is certainly a great selection if you are a “do it yourself-er” or can be a great place to pick up some of those primary color lines like Manic Panic.
7. False Lashes- Not just for Halloween ladies, these classics are fun for any night on the town. Stylist tip: when using band lashes, cut each lash in half and apply to outer two thirds of lash line, this will create a more natural but still dramatic effect. Also, make sure to pick up an extra tube of clear lash glue, usually the adhesive included in the kit is not enough.
8. Hot Rollers and Curling irons- Wavy, curly, and textured hair styles are back (beleive it or not they’re bringing back the perm) and the easiest way to get that look is with hot rollers or a curling iron. Make sure when purchasing an iron at a beauty supply that the handle is spring loaded since that’s the easiest to use.
Now get out there and shop! If nothing else poking around a beauty supply store always takes me back to the days when my girlfriends and I would hang out at the drugstore looking for the latest nail polish. So enjoy yourself and hopefully this will give you inspiration to visit your local beauty suppy store.
