Community: The ins and outs of beauty supply stores

Don't be dissuaded by their unblinking eyes :-)

So on yet another trip to the beauty supply store the other day, I realized that the joy of this sort of errand is not shared by most. It’s amazing the things you can no longer recognize as unique after a while. My daughter helped bring me back to reality when I heard her casually remark to her friend, “Well he said it was 100% human hair, but it turned out it really wasn’t”. Well Trinity, you really have a future in the family business if you decide to pursue it!
I also considered naming this post “Where to buy a blow dryer” since this is how most people who are not hairdressers find their way to a beauty supply store. Hair color developer is another item a client was searching for the other day in order to remove stains from vintage dishes, say what?? I had to look this one up myself, but it’s true and here is the link http://reviews.ebay.com/Cleaning-China-and-Stoneware-Utensil-Food-Marks_W0QQugidZ10000000004627264. So at any rate, this gives you an idea of some of the helpful items you can pick up, but here is what we most commonly recommend:
1. Flat irons: I use a brand called Diana the Huntress which is ceramic. The beauty supply across the street from us, Min’s, carries Salono Sapphire which I like a lot too. Try to use a thinner iron because it’s easier to manipulate and make sure the plates clamp together pretty tightly to create enough tension on the hair. Also, an iron that has a temperature control tends to be  better quality.
2. Blow dryers: Let’s start with the Fringe favorite, the Twin Turbo. The baby is a beast so don’t plan on traveling with it, unless you are willing to give up valuable luggage space. It does however have amazing power and speed as well as ceramic and ionic options. Depending on the model, expect to pay 95- 200 dollars.  If you blow out your hair on a regular basis, well worth the investment. Next in line is the Conair Blackbird, light dependable, and user friendly, as well as compact and inexpensive. The downside to this blowdryer is the power, expect to pay around $50. T3 Tourmaline Featherweight, has been the hot dryer on the market for a while, a quiet dryer that will dry the hair quickly because of the ionic charge from the tourmaline mineral (up to 60% they claim)  and weighs only 13 oz. It is however one of the most expensive models, expect to pay around $200.
3. Hairbrushes: Also a common request: “Where can I purchase a hairbrush?” so until yours truly gets off her keister and orders some into retail, you can pick up round brushes, vent brushes, and my personal favorite a Mason Pierson (also referred to as a flat brush). We do still carry the best paddle brush on the market, and the only one Aveda still makes, so be sure to come to us for that!
4. Bobby pins, hairbands and more: Great accessories to be found at these places. Ricky’s in New York is still one of my favorite stops, and although not convenient to here, definitely worth the stop when you are in the city.
5. Hair Product- Of course we recommend Aveda and do NOT recommend purchasing it from a Beauty Supply store. Often salon products like Aveda, Paul Mitchell, Redken, etc. have been diverted to these stores and are older products, watered down, or just more expensive then what you would normally be paying.
6. Hair Color-Not recommended since we believe you should always have your hair colored by a professional.  Now that I have made my disclaimer, I will tell you that there is certainly a great selection if you are a “do it yourself-er” or can be a great place to pick up some of those primary color lines like Manic Panic.
7. False Lashes- Not just for Halloween ladies, these classics are fun for any night on the town. Stylist tip: when using band lashes, cut each lash in half and apply to outer two thirds of lash line, this will create a more natural but still dramatic effect. Also, make sure to pick up an extra tube of clear lash glue, usually the adhesive included in the kit is not enough.
8. Hot Rollers and Curling irons- Wavy, curly, and textured hair styles are back (beleive it or not they’re bringing back the perm) and the easiest way to get that look is with hot rollers or a curling iron. Make sure when purchasing an iron at a beauty supply that the handle is spring loaded since that’s the easiest to use.
Nail Polish is another great Beauty Supply. BTW this girl's blog on Tumblr is adorable, it's called weekly nail
Now get out there and shop! If nothing else poking around a beauty supply store always takes me back to the days when my girlfriends and I would hang out at the drugstore looking for the latest nail polish. So enjoy yourself and hopefully this will give you inspiration to visit your local beauty suppy store.

Aveda Congress 2011

Aveda Congress..for me, it was a once in a lifetime experience to see the most talented and inspirational hairstylists that Aveda has to offer.  Six members of our Fringe Salon team had the honor to experience Aveda Congress.  This event was held on Sunday October 2nd at the Minneapolis Convention Center and was titled “Pow Wow!”

The biggest news at Congress was the upcoming launch of Full Spectrum Pure Pigments hair color. David Adams, an Aveda guest artist and color consultant introduced the vivid new shades with models sporting each dramatic hue. During the day, two additional Full Spectrum segments featured more color effects from Aveda guest artists and color mavens Lupe Voss and Ana Karzis. Lupe concentrated on the Violet Red with ombre (or as she prefers to say “progression color”) with her butterfly foil technique. Ana used her tap and twist method of tapping on the color and twisting the strand for lighter or darker effect depending on the tightness of the twist.

Another exciting event was the Pow Wow! contest.  Using Aveda products exclusively, contestants were asked to create a  look on a mannequin that showcased what Pow Wow! meant to them in the category of cut, color or style. Kim entered the style portion and Angela entered the color portion.  They both did an amazing job along with many other contestants.

What an amazing experience for me! I can only thank Kim for showing me the real world of fashion and hair! This is only the beginning!!  What’s next??

Silver Screen Hairstyles!

Hey movie watchers! I left you last time with an older movie, Amelie, which is still inspiring haircuts today! Today,  a newer, magical film called Midnight in Paris! Oh, the beautiful city of Paris, France, which I still have yet to experience. The best fashion trends and hairstyles have come from this magnificent city.

Midnight in Paris is written and directed by Woody Allen.  The film takes place in both the real and imaginative realm of Paris. Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams star in this romantic comedy about a couple who venture out to Paris for business. While in the “City of Love,” they realize the vast differences between them.

Gil (Owen Wilson), a distracted Hollywood screenwriter, is struggling to finish his first novel. He finds so much inspiration in Paris, so much that he seriously considers moving there. His fiancee, Inez (Rachel McAdams) does not share the same love, nor a desire to move there. Gil is a lover of the arts, and finds the city of Paris to be rather romantic. Inez, however, is not fazed by it at all.

Gil becomes rather sick of being around Inez’s parents.  When invited to go out at night, he declines and decides to talk a walk for inspiration. During this stroll his imagination takes charge and he experiences the splendor the city had to offer in the 1920’s. Every night, he continues to talk and walk and becomes involved in the magic it has to offer. Of course Gil’s fiance becomes frustrated with this. She soon has a detective follow him. This proves to be  unsuccessful, as the detective gets lost somewhere in Versailles. Just proves how the enchanting city of Paris can take you for a ride!

What I found to be ironic, is that Inez  is a woman who does not see the romantic side of things.  However, her hair is the epitome of romance, tousled so softly.   In order to achieve this look, I would shampoo and condition with a smoothing system and then set the hair in rollers. After the hair is dry, lightly finger comb it out, and then smooth any frayed edges with a medium sized curling iron. There you go! Perfect romantic curls… even if you are not the romantic type!

Trend Translation: Jewel-Toned Makeup for Fall 2011

I understand. Believe me, I do. When you’ve been sporting the barely-there (or literally bare) makeup look for a while, incorporating this season’s rich, deep, velvety, luxurious, and glamorous gemstone tones won’t feel like the easiest leap. However, we all know how great a compliment feels. Hopefully, by now, you’ve taken a risk or two in your personal style and realized how the people around you appreciate and admire a bold statement. So go for it!

Making appearances from runways to drug stores, coast to coast, everyone is doing it–jade green eyes, garnet-colored lips, metallic and smoky shadows from gold to violet. Because these colors are so bold and such a departure from the neutral families, they are surprisingly versatile. Choosing a neutral shade to complement your skin, hair, and eyes is actually trickier than simply applying whichever bold color you’ve always been attracted to–it’s a statement. It’s not meant to blend in.

My only word of caution with this trend: a clean, confident application. If you feel absolutely lost in the way of applying makeup, just give Fringe a call–I live and breath to spread the gospel of makeup application! However, if you are confident in experimenting at home, here are a few tips.

First and foremost, make sure to prime eyes from lid to brow as well as lower lash line. There are actual primers out there, but your concealer works wonders (a little goes a long way) as long as it’s safe for use on the eye. The newest word in makeup apps is completing your whole eye before applying foundation–this can be neater and prevent all the under-eye “clean-up” usually needed with bold or dark eye makeup. I know it’s counterintuitive–most of us think of foundation as the first step in any makeup application, but trust me, this is easier. Start simply, choosing one bold color to experiment with at first. Later, play with lighter and darker hues for highlighting and contour.

On-trend this season are bold eyes and lips coexisting in one look, but while you’re getting used to it, you may want to focus your pop of color one just one feature. If you choose a bold eye, still don’t forget about your lips completely–prime with lip moisturizer and use a nude gloss. If you go for this season’s blood red lip with beautiful golden undertones, leaves eyes nude or neutral (flesh-toned shimmer is beautiful as well), but don’t forget your mascara. Lashes are always in. To keep things very modern, cheek color can be barely-there, but this trend is really all about a throwback to bold trends of yore.

The short story is, any way you wear it, color is here for fall and it’s not going anywhere till next spring. Any way you wear it, just wear it. And yes, you can “pull it off,” because you’re beautiful anyway.

If I ever had a question about which eyeshadow or lipcolor would look good on me, or what style of clothes is trending now, I would ask no one but our own Catie Friel. (If you aren’t familiar with her, she was originally our receptionist. She then decided to go to Cosmetology school which she graduated and is now our assistant).  She is one of those girls who are just born with it… She could literally pull an outfit from my great great great grandmother’s closet and make it look amazing!

A couple weeks ago, Catie took her awesome talents to the next level and auditioned to become an Aveda Freelance Artist. She brought one of our other assistants, Gina, as a model and worked magic doing a full makeup application and a mini facial. And ta-da….One of our very own has achieved such an amazing title! We are so proud of her achievement!

After Catie’s audition, she went on to education where she learned more about Aveda culture and rituals… Now being a freelance artist, Catie can do makeup events at Aveda salons. She is  now also on a team of individuals,  whom Aveda will select  to participate in Fashion Week!

Here is some of Catie’s work..

In Catie’s words, “I have always had a passion for makeup.  To be recognized for my skills and given the opportunity to grow my career as a makeup artist feels like a dream come true!”

Way to go Catie!! We are all so proud of your accomplishment!!

Trend Translation: Braided Hair

No Gravatar

Sometimes we’re lucky enough to find trends we’re totally comfortable with coming back into fashion in edgy ways. Easy to spot hair style of the past summer: the roughed-up, beachy braid. This hairstyle lends a hint of bohemian motif to even the most mod, geometric ensemble. Swing all your hair low over one shoulder and just braid it loosely. Experiment with some backcombing to get that edgy bed-head braid. Make sure this messy style looks intentional by polishing up your look–wear at least a little makeup and a statement accessory–so people know it’s a style choice and you’re not falling apart at the seams. :)

Braids: Why now?    Über-long locks have been on trend for a long time now, and I thinks it’s time you long-tressed ladies start doing something with all those inches! Braids are not just for ballerinas anymore–this year, they’re sexy, romantic, and fun. Plus, they’re a new way to really show off that great dimensional color the ladies of Fringe give you.

Look for braids getting sleeker, neater and tighter in the fall. A high pony-tail is a great place to start and is easy to braid. Make sure hair is super tight and sleek and put a little thought into the styling of the braid itself–if you squeeze, tug, and manipulate the braid after it’s secured, you can change it’s width and shape. Try loosening some of the sections a la Blake Lively.

Braiding takes a little dexterity, but practice makes perfect. Your first attempt at incorporating this trend in a stylish way may end up looking a little pedestrian, but don’t worry. You’re beautiful anyway :)

Fringe Takes a Spot in “American Salon” Magazine

No Gravatar

Definitely some super exciting stuff I would like to talk about this month…

In the August, 2011 American Salon Issue Fringe was honored to take a page in the magazine that mostly serves professional hairdressers and beauty salon owners. Below is an article from the Maplewood Patch written by Mary Mann.

Flip the August issue of American Salon magazine open to page 48 and you’ll see a little article called “Big Fish, Small Pond.”

“In every small town across America, there’s at least one salon that raises the bar for everyone else. Maplewood, NJ (population 23, 867) has Fringe,” enthuses the mag about Maplewood’s Fringe Salon, which was opened on Springfield Avenue in 2007 by Kim Hammer after she migrated to South Orange from Brooklyn.

Fringe comes in for lots of kudos on the styling of the salon and the hip, urban quality of the clientele. But Maplewood gets some love too from American Salon: We’re “rich in history and natural surroundings” and “best known for being the birthplace of Ultimate Frisbee and the wooden golf tee.”

In the story, Hammer says Fringe’s success is “due to our active and constant involvement with the larger community” resulting in a “loyal client base.” The magazine spread features some lavish photos of the 1,100-sf and compliments its “hip, boutique-like atmosphere inspired by big-city apartments with a color palette of steely blue, turquoise, white and orange.” Hammer tells American Salon that she wanted Fringe to have the “vibe and feel of an artist’s loft, a space that my stylists could comfortably create in.”

Silver Screen Hairstyles!

Most recently, there have not been too many movies with great hair, which disappoints me, but led me to do a little research on some older movies that I have seen. I came across Amelie, which Iove  It was made in 2001 and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Amelie depicts the story of a shy Parisian girl who, although struggles with the feeling of isolation and lacks the self confidence that most of us have, spends her time trying to make others’ lives better.

One of the best foreign films I have seen!

Actress Audrey Tautou as Amelie

After the death of her mother, Amelie Poulain developed an unusually vivid imagination, in order to cope with her loneliness. She is quite an unusual girl.  At the age of 23, most woman are focused on finding their soul mates and creating a family. This is not Amelie’s thought process, however. She finds joy in sitting quietly in the background in the midst of all the hustle and bustle and just letting her imagination run wild.

Louise Brooks

Amelie decides to devote her life to making other people happy and becomes a sort of matchmaker, secretly manipulating hidden schemes in order to bring certain people together. She becomes friends with an older man who used to live in her apartment decades earlier. She visits him quite frequently and discusses his paintings and life in general. Because of this old man, Amelie starts to re-evaluate the life she is living and realizes that she must start thinking about herself, not just others.

Not only was this a great film, but the main character, Amelie, has amazing hair.   Throughout the film, Amelie is shy and timid and  tries to fade into the background. However she has this amazing hair cut, it is striking really! The blunt bangs and length cutting right into her cheekbones… Definitely not a fade-into-the-background hair do! This hairstyle and color was inspired by, if not copied from, silent film star Louise Brooks.

The lovely Susan Brand

This season’s collection of art work gracing the walls of Fringe, is on loan to us from local artist and Maplewood resident, Susan Brand.

Yet one more example of the inspiring people that live in our community. Susan’s creativity and wit come alive in her work.

Hi Clark!

It’s been nice to arrive at the salon in the morning and greet “Clark has moved in (Procyon Lotor)” who has been living by my station and makes me smile every time I see him.

An exerpt from www.susanbrand.com

“Susan Brand is an artist and illustrator whose work reflects her devout interest in nature and the perpetual tension of the boundaries between man and nature.

She works in a range of media including watercolors, acrylics, printmaking and collage. In addition to formal paintings of natural science subjects, Susan writes and illustrates children’s books based on nature and mythology.

Her work resides in several private collections as well as the collection of the State Museum of New York. In 2010, she supplied the cover illustrations for the award-winning The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elizabeth Tova Bailey.”
